We had the absolute pleasure of going up to Boone on Sat, Sep 1 to take some more furniture products from "GrandDad's Collections" for the growing-to-a-new-stage Davis, and while there went to the local wings restaurant, appropriately named Wings to Go. However, after we finally got in, we wisely decided not to go, but to stay.It was one of few places in town to watch the Appalachian State Univ - Univ of Michigan football game on semi-big screen tv screen. With a line waiting for tables, we decided to sit on a small bench across from the To Go counter, and try to eat our meal there while trying to watch the game. It was trying - especially with several large trays and no place to place them. But all was made much more bearable by the excellent way that ASU managed to play.
Michigan scored first and early and made the locals just a little nervous to how large the score would be. But ASU came back relatively soon with an impressive touchdown. Michigan scored again, and then so did ASU. Local students at nearby tables were beginning to get excited and began to eat and drink more. We all settled down for a long winter's nap. ASU scored ag'in and ag'in before half. It was beginning to look like another rout of the North.
After long half time waits for the bathrooms which were undersized for the over-fire-code-beer-drinking-crowds, the second half began. Michigan looked stronger, felt stronger and rejuvenated. But in the end, ASU held on, blocked the Michigan-win-the-game field goal with 6 seconds left on the clock! Excitement, high fives, and drinks were spilling all over the place.
It was absolutely trilling to be at Boone for this victory - which I am still convinced was to some degree inspired by a well-presented prayer by the team chaplain and very close family friend. We went home to rest and relax before going back out that evening to welcome the team back home.
The win by ASU was such a shock to the pigskin world that Sports Illustrated made it the cover story, and everyone in the state of North Carolina wanted a souvenir copy. Again, it was trying to get a copy in state (Barnes & Noble had their out-of-stock notice up by the time I got there, and telephone calls to other locations were equally unsuccessful) so I had to go across state and national lines. Copies are on the way from PA, MN and NM - many thanks to all! Still waiting on a response from Canada.
