September 21 - Went to the local Fiddle & Bow Society (Blessings Foundation) in West End to hear Jeff Warner down from New Hampshire. He has an amazing background as his parents (Frank and Anne Warner) began collecting and recording the old folk songs from North Carolina back in the 40's. Many are from the western mountains - in and around Boone - but there are some from the eastern shore of North Carolina. Jeff had been brought to Winston-Salem with a grant from the Blessings Foundation (I have to learn more about this group!), and performed in three local schools - one of them being

Chris's Mineral Springs Magnet Middle School. So she was very familiar with Jeff's abilities, stories, and knowledge of folk songs. He played the regular banjo, Frank
Proffitt banjo, guitar, and some instruments that I don't know. He also performed with the Limber Jack - a wooden figure that he makes dance to a tune. Amazing! I may have a new woodworking project. Jeff's brother,
Gerret, came over from Chapel Hill to participate in some of the songs. Of course, Chris purchased a CD of some of the collection with a focus on NC mountain songs. This great music was followed by gourmet ice cream at
McDonalds...
